One of my all-time favorite movies is Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator”. With the 87th Academy Awards quickly approaching, I have been thinking about this Best Picture winner. Let’s face it, I’m a sucker for any story that tackles the “hero’s journey”. Can you remember the oft quoted (and memed) scene from the Gladiator? This clip should spark your memory!
The fact is that your audience is fully engaged in popular culture; therefore, you should be too!
1. Be excited about what your audience is
To illustrate this point: please allow me to indulge in a personal example. This past October, I was able to experience a “first” in my lifetime.
Have you ever dreamed of something happening for years, only to realize that dream come to fruition? There is something simply magical when a dream becomes reality. I was able to fully realize that dream this past year.
I have been a die-hard Cubs fan practically from birth. For years, my Cubs had the unflattering moniker of the “lovable losers”. As you can imagine, as a fan, this does not make you want to hold your head high. Now, fast forward to this last October. The Chicago Cubs did the unthinkable. They summited the mountain known as the
World Series. I can tell you exactly where I was sitting, crumpled on the floor of my apartment with tears in my eyes. When Kris Bryant, the third basemen, recorded the last out I was overjoyed. I quickly started mentally soaking in everything I could about what was happening around me. As I was scrolling through my Facebook newsfeed, I saw this post from Strategic Life’s “fearless leader”.
2. Follow current trends - Relevancy is
What comes to mind when you hear the phrase “ice bucket challenge”? A few years ago, this phrase wouldn’t have meant much to you at all. However, in July of 2014, the ice bucket challenge took the internet by storm.
The idea was simple: dump a bucket of ice water over your head to raise awareness for the terrible disease known as ALS. Did you take part in the challenge? I know I did. We even took part in the ice bucket challenge as a team in the place where I was working. Sometimes, viral opportunities will fall into your lap. Don’t be afraid to take advantage of the opportunity. In this age of authenticity, social consciousness is invaluable.

engage your audience? We want to hear about it! Leave us a comment or engage us on social media. We’ll be sure to give you a shout out!
